Perception = Reality:
Why Reputation Management Really Does Matter

IABC Presents James Issokson, Senior Business Leader, Reputation and Issues Management, MasterCard Worldwide

With consumer trust at an all-time low, companies must take ownership of their reputation – considering it among its most important corporate assets. Easier said than done. A reputation is difficult to measure, which in turn makes for challenges in garnering the leadership support and dedicated resources needed to protect and strengthen it amidst other pressing business priorities. When done correctly, however, reputation management programs can create an “emotional currency” among stakeholders, significantly reducing the likelihood that a crisis will develop into a major disaster.

For MasterCard, successful reputation management is an integral part of its corporate strategy.  As a result, the company launched a Reputation Management function within the Worldwide Marketing and Communications organization and implemented a program based on research intelligence to understand and mitigate risks to its reputation. This information was used to develop a reputation platform that drives improvement in MasterCard’s overall reputation worldwide and elevate the importance of reputation among executives.
